Delhi government mulls setting up coal-based power plant

NEW DELHI: Planning for a long term solution to Delhi's electricity woes, the Arvind Kejriwal government is looking into setting up a coal-based power plant.

Sources have reported that Delhi government would soon approach the Centre to seek coal allocation to set up this 4000MW plant to meet the capital's power demand.

The proposed plant would come up in the outskirts of the city, keeping Delhi's environmental concerns in mind and could take anywhere between four to seven years to come up, according to sources.

"The government is mulling a coal-based plant because it is a cheaper alternative to gas-based power. Already gas based power plants are producing much less than their capacity due to gas shortage," said an official.
