Unlike the mobile app, which is available only on Android phones, this number can be accessed by all Android and non-Android phone users. "All details received on WhatsApp and Hike groups will be saved for one week so that we can track the accused or the vehicle," additional commissioner of police, operations, Ranvir Singh said.
The users can send their complaints along with pictures of the vehicles they board. They can send a message mentioning their name, boarding and destination points and the vehicle's number to alert police. They can also message the vehicle's registration number.
"The WhatsApp number will reach out to more women in the city instilling a feeling of self-confidence in them," Delhi Police commissioner B S Bassi said. The app was launched on January 1.
Bassi assured that the app will soon be available for iPhone and Windows users.
"The number has been integrated with the PA-100 system which will send an alert to the control room and the nearest PCR van will be rushed to the spot," O P Mishra, DCP, operations and communications, said.
Bassi also reiterated his proposal of starting compulsory self-defence classes for girl students from Class III onwards. "It will help overcome the capacity gap between girls and boys. By the time a girl reaches Class X, she will be able to handle any situation of distress," he said. This year, 15,000 girls have been given self-defence training and the target is to train one lakh girls. Bassi requested the women not using smartphones to save 100 and 1091 on their speed-dialing list so that immediate calls can be made to police control room.
