NEW DELHI: By changing the technique of removing the eye from a donor's body, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has created a record by giving sight to 1,093 people within a year.

Earlier, most families would reject the possibility of donating the eyes of their relatives citing disfigurement of the body as the reason.

"Since 2011, we started a new technique where only the corneal disc is removed to keep the overall appearance of the body intact and do not take out the entire eye," said Dr JS Titiyal, professor and head, cornea, cataract refractive surgery services at AIIMS' RP Eye Centre.

Dr Titiyal said they received nearly 1,300 eye donations last year and 80% of them were transplanted to needy patients successfully. "For the first time, we have crossed the 1,000 mark from the usual figure of 800-900 eye transplants each year. In 2014, we performed 1,093 eye transplants," said Dr Titiyal.

This year, till March 5, AIIMS' RP Eye Centre has conducted about 140 eye transplants, he added.

The doctor said that increased awareness among people about the nobility attached to donating organs and tissues coupled with the hard work of transplant coordinators in convincing families of potential donors have helped achieve the success.

Cornea, the transparent tissue covering the eye, allows light to enter and performs two-thirds of the focusing tasks. For people suffering from vision loss due to irreparable damage of the tissue, transplant is the only option. An eye transplant involves replacing a diseased or scarred cornea with a donor graft.

Experts say India has 3.5 million people with corneal blindness and every year 30,000 new patients suffer from the ailment.

At least two lakh cornea donations are needed annually, but only about 50,000 such procedures take place due to paucity of donors.

Preservation of the donated tissues is another key problem.

"Nearly 30% of the eyes donated go to waste because either the tissue is damaged/infected or the recipient is not available immediately," said an eye expert.

AIIMS is working on developing solutions that can preserve the corneas for a longer period of time at a low cost as compared to the imported ones.
