SA smuggler arrested at IGI, Delhi cops flush out 1.3kg cocaine

NEW DELHI: A South African was arrested by sleuths of the Narcotics Control Bureau for allegedly smuggling around 1.3kg of cocaine by swallowing 65 pellets of the drug, each weighing 20 grams. Officials have called this haul one of the biggest in cases of swallowed contraband recoveries and estimate the cost of the drugs to be around Rs 6.5 crore.

The accused, identified as Bobby Collins Anagar (42), had arrived in Delhi by an Emirates flight from Sao Paulo via Dubai on March 29. The accused was nabbed after his behaviour was found suspicious by officials.

"Anagar was intercepted at IGI Airport. While his personal and baggage search did not reveal anything, his continuous refusal to eat or drink indicated that he was carrying the drugs inside his body," said NCB zonal director Rohit Sharma.

Interestingly, Anagar had taken the same route as two other South African nationals who were arrested with 9.6kg of cocaine last week.

"During prolonged questioning, he started getting restless and requested the officers to provide him medical aid to allow him to pass the capsules," Sharma added.

The accused was then taken to Safdarjung hospital where a CT scan and an X ray revealed the presence of the substance in his abdomen. "Anagar was kept under supervision for two days till he passed the pellets in his stool in a phased manner. Any efforts at forced ejection of stool could have resulted in a rupture and even a single pellet burst in the gut could have killed him due to drug overdose," the official added.

Officials said that each pellet was roughly 4-5 centimeters and encapsulated in a cellophane covering. NCB was in touch with Delhi Police and other intelligence agencies to ascertain Anagar's involvement in previous cases. The accused had reportedly visited India twice in 2014 on a "business trip". Senior officers said that professional 'swallowers' are known to carry 500-600 grams of drugs in their gut across international borders.
