According to police, after the store owner alerted his neighbours, there was firing of shots between the two which left the robber fatally injured. The others managed to escape.
The four men were in the process of stealing metal pipes from a store owned by former army personnel Prakash Chand. Chand, who was asleep in his house alongside the store, woke up to realize he was being looted. He soon alerted his neighbors, some of whom were armed, police said.
According to the police, when Chand and his neighbours confronted the thieves, they opened fire.
Seeing that they were grossly outnumbered, the thieves attempted to flee but one of them, who had been injured, hit a pillar and fell down. The police said the accused, who had suffered a gunshot wound, was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
The police have not been able to identify the deceased but have recovered a mobile phone among his belongings. "The mobile phone is registered to a lady who is a resident of this area. We are in the process of tracing the whereabouts of the robbers," said RK Dwivedi, SHO, Vijaynagar.
The police said that no charges pertaining to murder have been lodged. "We have filed an FIR under sections of IPC pertaining to robbery and civil violence," added Dwivedi.
