Survey deflates govt claim on sparrow count

NEW DELHI: Sparrows are returning to the city, claims the Delhi government's energetic radio campaign launched in the run-up to the assembly elections. But the sole sparrow survey conducted in the capital tells a different story - sightings of the bird have, in fact, become rarer after 2010.

According to the Citizen Sparrow online survey, the percentage of people reporting absence of the bird from their areas increased to 18.8% after 2010, as compared to 7.84% before that year. The proportion of people who reported seeing large flocks of the bird decreased sharply from 28.1% before 2010 to 8.43% since that year. These numbers were given by K Karthik, project coordinator of the Citizen Sparrow initiative, a programme launched by the Bombay Natural History Society in collaboration with other organizations to collect data on house sparrows across the country.

"The Delhi government has provided nest boxes for sparrows but there is lack of scientific data to evaluate the effectiveness of these measures. Figures thrown up by the survey, based on people reporting, depict a negative trend in house sparrow population," says Karthik. The advertisement in question is on the city government's afforestation drive. It ends with, "Aur ab toh Delhi ki priya chidiya, gauraiyya, bhi wapas aney lagi hai (Now Delhi's favourite bird, the sparrow has started returning to the city)."

Senior officials in Delhi government's environment department said the radio ad was based on feedback sent by citizens. "Our ad is based on some letters, including a UPSC member's letter to the chief minister congratulating the government on the campaign and to say that he has spotted sparrows," an official said.

Sparrows have been mysteriously disappearing from urban areas in many parts of the world. It's a puzzle scientists are still working to crack although a number of reasons - increased use of pesticides and fertilizers, decline in 'unorganized' green spaces, architectural changes in houses, radiation from mobile towers - have been offered to explain it.

A forest department official said the Delhi government plans to reduce pesticide and insecticide use, enhance the habitat for sparrows and organize a census for gathering data on the sparrow population.

The Citizen Sparrow survey may not give very accurate data as it is based on self-reporting by individuals. "Yet, it is the best source of information on the status of sparrows in the country," said Raju Kasambe, coordinator, Indian Bird Conservation Network.
