With Kejriwal waving a purported copy of the letter in his public interactions, BJP spokesperson Sanjay Kaul said, "It is a blatant lie. It is unbecoming of someone who has held office (as Delhi CM) to indulge in this level of falsehood. I challenge Kejriwal to produce such a letter. Else, he should apologize publicly for the statement."
BJP said the letter was actually a recommendation by Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation relating to just one gas block in the Krishna-Godavari basin and did not have anything to do with the issue of gas pricing in general at the national level. "Gujarat CM and BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi has never written such a letter to the Central government. Moreover, he should know that prices and volumes of natural gas are dictated by the Central government and state governments have no role to play,'' said Kaul.
With days left for polling in Delhi, BJP leaders said Kejriwal is politicizing the gas pricing issue to bolster his popularity in the wake of opinion polls showing a sharp decline since he quit government.
While the gas pricing issue is pending before Supreme Court, BJP leaders say that by unnecessarily politicizing the issue Kejriwal is harming the interests of Indian consumers. Kaul said controversies such as the one raised by AAP will only hurt domestic production and raise dependence on costlier imports.
