Ram Sajeevan, who was driving the car, parked the vehicle on roadside and tried to get out but the central locking system malfunctioned. He called out for help after which locals and a traffic cops opened the door and pulled him out of the car during which he suffered burns. The car soon burst into flames.
Police said the car belonged to a Kapasheda-based businessman Anil Gupta. On Thursday, Gupta's wife had gone to Sarojini Nagar to visit a relative and Sajeevan was to pick her up. While Sajeevan was on his way to Sarojini Nagar, he noticed smoke billowing out of the engine. Passersby also informed him about the flames coming out of the bonnet after which he parked the vehicle and called for help.
Police said they were trying to find out the exact cause of the fire. They said Cruze was a petrol-driven car. And they are probing if it was a case of over heating of the engine.
