On Sunday, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, women and child development minister Sandeep Kumar and DCW chairperson Barkha Singh took part in a function and felicitated five women of Delhi for outstanding services.
"These women showed extraordinary courage in adverse circumstances. The 'Zila Mahila Samman' carries a cash prize of Rs 20,000," said an official. Identities of the women were not revealed as they include two rape survivors, an acid attack survivor and an activist who works for education and welfare of sex workers.
While the country has been celebrating women's day since 1910, Sisodia lamented that in 105 years there was no city or village in India which was free from crimes against women. "I think the time has come to introspect what we have been doing for over a century. It is crucial for us to see how gender sensitive we are as a nation and our effort is to make Delhi the first city to stop crimes against women," said Sisodia.
Sisodia also announced that Justice Verma Committee report will also be implemented soon in Delhi. The government will organize orientation programmes for MLAs, senior officers and volunteers to train them for safe guarding the interests of women and ensuring their safety.
